The 54th
CYC Convention will take placeAugust 24th – 28th,
2005 in Saskatoon, SK, the City of Bridges, "Where it all began"!
The planning committee and its subcommittees totaling some 33 enthusiastic
volunteers are planning what is anticipated to be one on the best CYC
Conventions ever!
The Convention’s
theme is "Focus, Creativity, Unity".
The Radisson Hotel
was selected, jointly by the National CYC executive and the planning
committee, as an excellent facility for the Convention in an excellent
location. Billed as Saskatoon’s first world-class hotel when it was
built, it offers fine amenities just a block away from the famous Broadway
Bridge, the landmark Bessborough Hotel and the South Saskatchewan River
with its beautiful riverside parks. It is just three blocks from Saskatoon’s
downtown core, famous for its statues of John Diefenbaker, Sir Wilfred
Laurier and Mahatma Ghandi as well as the Mid-Town Plaza, Saskatoon’s
largest shopping centre. Depending on your room’s location you will
likely have a view of several of these beautiful landmarks. The Radisson
is currently remodeling its lounge and restaurant area, which will be
in readiness for our Convention! The hotel’s indoor waterslide will
be a hit with young and old alike! Our Museum is also close, only a
15 minute walk along the riverside park.
Saskatoon and Saskatchewan
played an important role in our CYC history. CYC was founded here, as
were the Peter Mohyla Ukrainian Institute, the Ukrainian Women’s Association
of Canada (UWAC), the Ukrainian Self-Reliance Association (TYC), the
Canadian Ukrainian Youth Association (CYMK) and the Ukrainian Museum
of Canada.
The Convention
year 2005 coincides with the 100th Anniversary of the Province
of Saskatchewan! Many of our convention registrants will be from Alberta,
the province that is also celebrating it’s 100th anniversary
in 2005! Commemorations will be planned for the Convention to mark the
joint centenaries of these two provinces that hosted the settlements
of so many of Canada’s original Ukrainian immigrants. Come to the 2005
Convention in Saskatoon, "Where it all began"!
The Convention
will not only consist of meetings. Tours, entertainment and special
feature items will all be part of the program. Look forward to being
entertained by the Lastiwka Ukrainian Orthodox Youth Choir and dance
to the Ukrainian stylings of "Zvook", undisputedly one of
Saskatchewan’s finest dance bands. Tours will enable you to see the
Saskatchewan landscape with many Ukrainian churches dotting the landscape
including St.Julien’s "prairie chathedral". Perhaps you would
like to visit the University of Saskatchewan campus with unique features
not matched by any other Canadian university - Canada’s Light Source,
the country’s only synchrotron or the stately Lesia Ukrainka statue.
The new agriculture and physical education buildings are other campus
attractions. You may choose to go the famous spa at Manitou Beach at
Watrous, where the water is the most dense of any spa in North America,
several times as dense a sea water! At Watrous you will visit Danceland
which has Canada’s only dance floor floating on a bed of horsehair.
This is only a sample description of the many experiences that will
be offered.
Saturday afternoon
free time will offer the option of attending the fifth annual Ukraine
Day in the Park.located ½ block from the Convention Hotel in the riverbank
park next to the Bessborough Hotel. This event features 20 performing
groups with food sales, beer garden, cultural displays, children’s activities,
music with an audience of several thousand people.
In order to put
on a quality convention financial support is needed. We appeal to our
organizations and interested individuals to make a financial contribution
to assure a top quality convention. Donations will be recognized in
the Convention program book.
Sponsorships are
available as well. If your group would like to sponsor a banquet or
luncheon, an entertainment item, display or a specific item of your
choosing, this may be done as well with appropriate recognition given.
We ask that National
Executives consider their need for time needed to conduct their sessions
and let the convention planning committee know their requirements.
If you would like
to mount a display or space to sell items at the convention please contact
the planning committee.
A Canadian
50 cent stamp recently carried a view of Saskatoon that includes
the CYC convention hotel (Radisson). The hotel is the furthest
building to the left on the stamp. The excitement is building!
